  4.     For the past year, the leftist Farabundo Marti National
  5. Liberation Front has been itching for a rematch with El
  6. Salvador's U.S.-trained armed forces. Last year thousands of
  7. FMLN fighters nearly overran the capital, San Salvador, before
  8. the army's superior firepower inflicted heavy casualties on the
  9. rebels. Last week the FMLN launched a minioffensive in 10 of the
  10. country's 14 departments but scored no major victories.

  12.     Officials estimated that 200 civilians and fighters were
  13. killed, and more than 300 were wounded throughout the country.
  14. The FMLN leadership views such muscle flexing as a bargaining
  15. chip in U.N.-mediated negotiations with the government to end
  16. the decade-old civil war.
